Boston Comedy: Joe Wong back on Letterman Friday

Joe Wong taped his second appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman on Monday, which will air Friday. Contacted by e-mail, Wong reports that all went well. “The second time is slightly easier,” he said. “I am more familiar with the stage and the theater. I felt that the crowd loved it. I’d have to watch it Friday to know better. I am never calm enough right after a show to judge it.”

Joe won’t have much time to celebrate. He’ll be headlining The Comedy Club at Cheers on Friday and Saturday, running home to watch the spot Friday night. “I like agonizing over a bad set alone (kidding),” he said. “I want to stay at home as much as possible because I am traveling more and more these days.”

In case you missed it, here’s Wong’s Letterman spot from April of last year.

The Comedians: Steve Sweeney

“When I started,” said comedian Steve Sweeney, “I worked with a lot of good people, folks like George Carlin and Jay Leno. In the beginning everyone said, ‘Don’t swear and don’t do all local stuff.’ Rather than wanting to be yourself, they wanted you to be somebody else. I never really cared about making it. I wanted to be different. So swearing was all I did. How did the guy make his money off the hula hoop? Reputation. I got a reputation as the guy with local characters who swears, like the guys from the corner. People identified with that. So I’ve been able to eek out a living from it.”

Hollywood East: Not Your NORMal Day at Cheers

When first time visitors to Boston get “thirsty” the first place that comes to mind is, “where everybody knows your name” and because of returning patrons like “Cheers” star George Wendt, “they are always glad you came”. The legendary Cheers landmark is shared by two different locations only miles away from each other. The Replica Cheers Bar is located in Fanueil Hall and the Set Bar is located on Beacon Hill where “Norm Peterson” stopped in unexpectedly last week. Wendt was in the city promoting his new book, Drinking with George. A book that has similar qualities as your favorite drinking buddy. It shares personal stories of Wendt growing up, useful facts about lager, ale and stout, and wise cracking one-liners.
